Val Matteotti Golden Hawks Tournament Update Weekend January 20 – 24th
The Val Matteotti Golden Hawks hosted a successful AAA Bantam tournament last weekend. The Hawks won two and lost one in the round robin portion of the tournament, beating the Lloydminster Heat 8-1 and the South Delta Storm 3-1, the only loss in the round robin portion was to the Red Deer Rebels Black, losing 4-2. In the Semi-final game the Hawks played the Spokane Chiefs. The Hawks played some of their most inspired hockey of the season scoring 5 unanswered goals in a 7-4 come from behind victory, Jared Broderson was the MVP for the Hawks in this game. The win propelled the Hawks to the championship final against the Red Deer Rebels Black. It was a great game that was finally settled in overtime with Red Deer defeating Lethbridge 2-1 in overtime, Jonathan Hogue was the MVP for Lethbridge in the final game. The Hawks hope to carry this momentum forward into the final weeks of their regular season. This weekend the Hawks host the Calgary Royals on Saturday January 29th at 5 pm at the Henderson Ice Arena. On Sunday the Hawks travel to Calgary to play the league leading Bisons at 1:15pm.
M15′s
Although the M15 Hurricanes started off the new year with a loss, they redeemed themselves last weekend with back to back wins. The first win came on Fri, Jan 14th at Henderson vs. NWCAA Bruins. the Canes won 7-2 with goals being scored by Justin Mitchell and Matthew Rypien the 1st period. The 2nd period saw Gray Marr and Jonathon Zdan add 2 and Rypien add his 2nd goal of the game. Austin Howe and Austin Weersink added goals 6 and 7 in the 3rd period. David Rupp was the winning goalie for the Canes.
Sat., Jan 15th the Canes travelled to Calgary and posted a 4-2 win over the CNHA Blazers. In net for the Canes was Tyson Brouwer and those scoring were Justin Mitchell, Matthew Rypien and Clay Spencer with 2 goals. The Hurricanes will have the week off, with the next action on Jan. 29 at the Red Deer arena vs. the Red Deer North Star Chiefs.
Val Matteotti Golden Hawks update weekend January 15th and 16th
The Lethbridge Val Matteotti Golden Hawks took to the ice Saturday against the Calgary North Stars. The Hawks settled for a 2-2 tie with the visiting North Stars. Scoring for Lethbridge were Jared Broderson and Cavin Leth, Jonathan Hogue stopped 35 shots to preserve the tie. On Sunday the Hawks traveled to Calgary to take on the Calgary Bronks. The Hawks came away on the short end of the stick losing 4-1. Cavin Leth had the lone goal for the Hawks. The Golden Hawks will host a Bantam AAA Tournament this weekend in Lethbridge. There will be AAA teams from all four western provinces as well as a team from Spokane, Washington in the four day tournament. The Hawks will start the tournament with a game against the Lloydminster Heat on Thursday January 20th at 6 pm in the Henderson Ice arena.
M15′s
The M15 LAA Hurricanes met the CRAA Blue at Henderson, Fri. Jan7. The CRAA Blue defeated the Canes 6-2. Scoring for the Hurricanes were Clay Spencer assisted by Austin Howe in the 2nd period and Gray Marr assisted by Clay Spencer and Ryer Sawchuk on a 3rd period power play. Next action for the Canes will be Fri., Jan 14, 8:30 at Henderson vs. the NWCAA Stampeders.
Golden Hawks Holiday update
The Lethbridge Val Matteotti Golden Hawks were busy over the Christmas break. The Hawks played in the Edmonton Invitational Bantam Tournament from December 27th – 31st. The Hawks started well beating the Prince George Cougars 6-4 but then suffered 3 straight defeats ending any chances of playing in the finals. On Sunday January 2nd the Hawks returned to League action taking on the Airdrie Extreme. The Hawks came out on the wrong end of a 7-4 score. Scoring for Lethbridge were Zachary Wall, Jared Broderson, Austin Huculak, and Devon Jerome. This weekend Lethbridge hosts the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League All Star Game at 2pm at the Nicholas Sheran ice arena. The game will feature some of the best Bantam prospects in Western Canada. Representing Lethbridge are Cavin Leth and Jace Jurgens. The Hawks return to action on Sunday with a tough divisional opponent the Medicine Hat Hockey Hounds. Game time is 12 noon at the Henderson Ice Arena.
