The Pee Wee AA Val Matteotti Eagles earned a lone point in a weekend home and home series against the Medicine Hat Venom.

The Eagles started the weekend with a 3-3 tie on home ice.  Medicine Hat scored the lone goal in the first period just four minutes into the game.  They extended the lead to 2-0 while shorthanded before the Eagles made it 2-1 while on a two man advantage.  Blake Kleiner took the pass from Kason Furukawa on the opposite point, skated in and put a low hard shot past the Medicine Hat goalie.  Also assisting on the play was Grayson Constable.  Before the second was over Medicine Hat scored a second short handed goal to again regain a two goal lead.  Lethbridge stormed back in the third with two goals 25 seconds apart in the ninth minute.  Scoring the second goal for the Eagles was Constable who picked the corner up high after receiving a nice pass across from Quinn Gunlock who had taken the puck off the boards and walked in on a two on one with Constable.  The tying goal was scored by Sam Paskuski who one-timed a pass into the back of the Medicine Hat net.  Assists went to Brody Hansen and Tyler Anderson.  Matt Lukacs faced 42 shots in the Lethbridge net to help earn the tie.

Last weekend, the Lethbridge Bantam AA Hurricanes went undefeated to improve their record to 3-2-3 on the season.
First on Saturday, the Hurricanes travelled to Cochrane to take on the Bow Valley Timberwolves, who are sitting at a comfortable second place in the SCAHL north division.
With the help of Hurricane netminder Logan Rowley, the game remained scoreless at the first intermission. Bow Valley opened the scoring up early in the second to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. A hard forecheck and great passing gave way to a well earned Hurricane goal at the 17 minute mark to tie the game. Scoring was Riel Bruised Head with assists going to Logan Ramsdell and Kenny Thomas.
A scoreless final frame, the game remained tied at one, with the two teams settling on a point apiece. Rowley faced 28 shots for the tie.
A home tilt on Sunday saw the Hurricanes come away with a 6-3 victory over the visiting Red Deer Ramada.
The visitors proved a formiddable oponent as they jumped to a quick 2-0 lead early in the first, until Landon Gross scored to pull the Hurricanes within one at the flood. Assists going to Bruised Head and Clay Vogt.
A penalty-filled second period, emotions were running high as the two teams battled for control. Gross netted his second of the game, unassisted, early in the period to tie the game at two. Red Deer replied midway through to regain the one goal lead, until Hurricane centreman Chase Bell tied the game at 3 with a pass from Ramsdell.
The Hurricanes capitalized on some miscues in the third period by the visitors, scoring three unanswered tallies to give the Hurricanes a convincing 6-3 win. Goal scorers in the third were Bell, Ramsdell and Devin Ruff, with assists going to Vogt, Gross, Bryce Deboer and Robert Milojovic with two. Goaltender Arik Weersink made 37 saves for the win.

Hurricanes take another 3 of 4 points on weekend

The AAA Midget Hurricanes had a successful weekend from a performance point of view. On Saturday night at home versus the Knights of Columbus Pats out of Edmonton the club scored a 4 – 2 victory, it might have been 9 to 1 if not for the outstanding play of the Edmonton goaltender. The Canes held the balance of play for major portions of the game. Bryson Gore opened the scoring only a minute into the game of a beautiful individual effort, beating a K of C defender and then making a nifty move on the goaltender and sliding it home for a one to nothing lead. Jackson Purvis got the PP streak going with a nice goal with 4 minutes to play in the first to take a 2 – 0 lead into the break. AAA minor midget call up Clay Spencer again scored on the PP only 3 minutes into the second after Colby Murray and Tyler Kerner did some great work along the wall. Murray then gave Spencer the pass and Spencer did the rest putting it top shelf over the glove. After Edmonton closed the lead to one with a goal 2 minutes into the third period. Ashton Mcleod scored on the PP on nice pass from Kyle Davies, to put a 3rd PP goal on the score sheet. Micheal Fredrick made 14 saves on 16 shots, and although he was not tested alot he did make several saves when the Hurricanes had some breakdowns. The Canes did use 3 players from the AAA 15′s on Saturday, and all 3 Spencer, Gray Marr, and Jordan Wiest all played very well.
On Sunday the big club made it’s way to Calgary to play the 1st place Calgary Buffaloes. The Canes started the game with only 3 lines and 5 defencemen, due to the various injuries that seem to be plaguing the team. In total man games lost the total is already at 27, some team don’t even lose that many in a season. With this shortened lineup the Canes probably put in the best effort of the season, earning themselves a point, in a 2 – 2 tie. After outplaying the 1st place team the entire first period the Buffaloes scored a lucky goal 6 minutes into the second after 3 bounces and a pad save, Calgary forward MAtt Scarth slid the puck in for a 1 to 0 lead. Lethbridge did have their chances in the 2nd frame having 3 breakaways including 2 on the same shorthanded play. The game went into the 3rd with the Calgary team on top. 2 minutes into the 3rd Calgary forward Jason Wallace put one passed goalie Alex Wakaluk after a rare defensive zone breakdown to take a 2 to 0 lead. This did not deter the Canes as they stayed patient within their system and half way through Kyle Davies took a pass from Ryan Chynoweth who out worked 2 Calgary players behind the net and fired one home to cut the lead to 1. On the same shift 1 minute later Kyle Davies received a breakaway pass from Holden Lamb and went in on the Calgary goaltender and fired another shot passed the goalie low to the glove side to even the game up at 2. Playing on tired legs, the Hurricanes continued to outplay the 1st place club for the remainder of the game riding a big wave of emotion to earn themselves the tie. Goalie Alex Wakaluk stopped 29 of 31 shots, many of them sensational stops.
After starting out 0 and 4, the Canes finally look like a team that is turning a corner. Their current record is 2 wins, 4 losses, and 2 ties, for 6 points which has them sitting in 6th spot the the south division. Their next action in next weekend when they will travel to Edmonton to take on the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers whom they beat for their first win of the season last weekend, and on Sunday they play the CAC Canadians, a team that beat the Hurricanes on their opening weekend by a score of 6 to 3.

Little Caesar Hurricanes Female Bantam AAA weekend results

The Female Bantam AAA Little Caesars Hurricanes took to the road on the weekend for a pair of AMBFHL games in Lloydminster.
Saturday night the girls got off to a slow start after 6 hours on the bus, allowing a goal against in the 1st and 2nd falling behind 2-0 to the hometown IceCats after 2 periods of play. The 3rd period was a much better effort for the female canes as they outchanced their opponent but they just couldn’t get on the scoreboard. Brook Paisley turned aside 25 of 27 shots in the loss.
Sunday the girls looked to bounce back in the second contest and just under a minute into the 1st frame they drew first blood with Raven Beazer scoring a short handed marker off a rebound from a shot in the slot by Darby Bertsch to give the Canes a 1-0 lead. Lloyd replied at the 13 minute mark of the first on a partial breakaway to even the score at 1 apiece heading into the 2nd. The teams battled hard for the next 20 minutes with only a few scoring chances and only 5 shots each in a period that saw 24 minutes in penalties and Hurricane defender Shawni Rodeback exchange punches with an IceCat forward where both received fighting majors and game misconducts.
The 3rd frame continued its physical almost chippy trend where the canes discipline may have gotten the best of them allowing the go ahead goal just over the 11 minute mark on a screen shot from the point through traffic while on the penalty kill. 2 minutes later with the Canes on the kill again Mackenzie Gal sprung Tricia Van Vaerenbergh on a short handed break away which she made no mistake on, sniping a shot low to the glove side to knot things at 2. Then with Just under 8 minutes left in the 3rd, Beazer found the net for the 2nd time, taking a shot that tipped off a Lloyd defender fooling the goalie for what proved to be the game winner. In the 3rd period the Canes were outshot 18 – 11 but Paisley was up to the challenge turning aside all but 1 and overall faced 28 shots in the win.
The win improves the female Hurricanes record to 2 wins & 3 losses in 5 games and they sit 3rd in the South Division and 6th overall in the AMBFHL standings.
The girls are off this weekend but head up to RedDeer for pair of games next weekend.

Midget Hurricanes get 3 out of 4 points

After a rough start to the AMHL season, losing their first 4 games, the Hurricanes finally filled in some of the zeros in the standings. On Saturday night the Canes tied the Sherwood Park Kings 4 – 4. After being down by 4, one minute into the 2nd period the midget squad rallied back with 2 of their own in the 2nd on goals by Craig Lyon, and Marc Eremenko. In the 3rd period half way through Rhys Kingston set up Dallas Mortensen on a beautiful pass to the back door, for a PP marker to get them within one. With the goalie pulled and on the PP again, Kyle Davies scored the equalizer with 1:24 to pull the game even, and earn the team a point for the loss.

On Sunday a still shorthanded roster, came out with lots of energy and took the game to the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers. They had plenty of chances to score, a goal post, and one called back before Holden Lamb finally put on past the Ft. Sask goalie on a scrambled play at the net front. In the 2nd period Craig Lyon scored his second goal of the weekend to put the Canes back in front, and 5 minutes later Tyler Kerner pumped on home on the PP to give them a 2 goal lead heading into the 3rd. After a penalty filled 3rd, Brandyn Hulit scored into an empty net to solidify the win, and earn the Canes their first win of the season.

Val Matteotti Golden Hawks Weekend update

This past weekend, the Val Matteotti Golden Hawk had two hard fought battles both being on home soil. After coming off a lopsided loss last weekend to the very strong Calgary Royals squad, the boys had a shaky start to Saturday’s game after letting one sneak by early in the first. After sitting in the dressing room for a while due to an injury on the ice the boys came back and answered the bell and at the end of the day we had taken a 5-2 victory over Okotoks. Going into the game we knew that Okotoks would be a hard battle but our team believes when you have 19 players who come to play, we are able to shut down the best teams. With Sunday’s game against Grand Prarie (not yet having a win under their belts and losing a close 4-3 battle to Med Hat last night) we knew they would come out hungry for a win before heading back home for 12 hours on a bus. The Hawks got off to a quick start scoring 20 seconds into the game making it a 1-0 hockey game early and from there we took a 4-1 game after 60 hard minutes. Was a team effort in both games, the D men on Saturday had a tough task to shut down the number one player on Okotoks and they answered the challenge. Another key player on Saturday definitely started between the pipes as Aspen Pitre made some outstanding saves stopping 19 out of 22 tough shots and getting player of the game. Jonny Hogue had a great game on Sunday as well stopping 23 out of 24 shots. Two of the team leaders led the way as Captain Cavin Leth had a strong weekend with 5 points in 2 games and assistant captain Benny Benson not too far behind him with 3 points in 2 games. At the back end a 1st year who seems to be getting better each game, Carson beers had a 2 point weekend and a strong defensive performance to earn him the Golden Hawk trophy awarded by coach Lou Bardics to player of the game. Accolades this weekend also go out to Austin Huculak who plays a rough and tough game and shut down the opposition forwards while they were driving wide on his wall and he also had some offensive performance with a goal from a howitzer slap shot from the point. Going into this week of practice the Hawks will need some more work on both our power play break out and set up in the offensive end. Okotok’s coaches said they had no answer for the Hawks power play on Saturday as the PP unit was very strong with the offensive zone set up and puck movement. Sunday the power play was not as effective. It will be a hard week of practice and preparation this week as we face two very tough Calgary opponents this weekend in the Bisons and the Bronks.

A goal mouth scramble led to Medicine Hat’s third goal to round off scoring for the second period.
